I'M DENISE, WELCOME TO MY ARTSPACE.
I'm an artist, designer and wildlife watcher with a passion for the natural world.
I design and make contemporary art, interior textiles and jewellery in my small studio on the Isle of Skye.
As a college lecturer with a background is in art, textiles and interior design, I exhibited extensively and my work has featured in magazines and on television.
My work is increasingly influenced by my spectacular surroundings. Currently, I create original artwork using silkscreen techniques, often combined with painting. Art is for sale in the open studio/gallery, where visitors are welcome.
A screenprint is a hand printed art work. An ancient art with origins in Japanese fabric decoration, dating back thousands of years. Each piece is hand drawn by the artist, then laboriously developed to create a unique silkscreen. Each colour requires a separate screen to be made before the artist can handprint the design onto specialist art papers and fabrics. Silkscreen printing was first adopted by graphic artists in the 1930s, and popularised by Pop artists such as Andy Warhol in the 60s.
HOW I CREATE MY ART
I begin by drawing, painting and taking photographs. Although it is a lengthy process, a personal approach is very important to me. I then spend endless hours, weeks, often months, translating my drawings into artwork, suitable for this technique. I live and work in a remote place and have no other specialist equipment except the silkscreens. My working methods are very low tech . . a domestic light to expose my screens, a lightly padded plywood board for a print table and a hosepipe for cleaning up! When my design is eventually exposed on the silkscreen . . the sampling starts. Extensive trials and tweaking, selecting and rejecting, take place before I can finally hand print the design. I print with eco-friendly, water-based inks on specialist cotton rag papers, organic cotton and linen. Textile prints are ironed for several minutes each to ensure the colour is fast.
